Port Ellen 35 yo Director’s Cut 51.1%
This is a bottling by Douglas Laing of 35 year old Port Ellen. Bottled at 51.1% abv and was matured in refill hogshead casks. It is a limited run of only 162 bottles. This is one of Fred Laings’ favourite whiskies.
Nose: Elegant, sweet earthiness with seaweed on the nose, boat oil and an Atlantic sea-salt tang.
Taste: Wonderfully balanced taste with peat smoke, a citrus ‘zing’, barley and a milky hot chocolate depth
Finish: Long with a distinctive finish; sweet-smoke character, rock salt and a mushroom earthiness.
The distillery is located in Port Ellen and was closed in 1983 but continues to produce malt for all the Islay distilleries (Ardnahoe being the exception). This was part of an agreement in 1987. Owned by Diageo, the stocks of Port Ellen are now dwindling and it has become a hugely collectable distillery. In October 2017 Diageo announced the reopening of the distillery which will happen in 2020 after a £35million investment. Sadly the stills were destroyed when the distillery shut but every effort is being made to recreate them faithfully.
