The Ardbeg 8yo For Discussion is a members-only Committee Release, and it remains to be seen if it will join the core-range in Ardbeg’s gradually expanding portfolio.   So, apart from the age statement of 8 years old, what is it that’s up for discussion?  The answer is pretty interesting and prompts some exploration into Ardbeg’s flavour spectrum….

Ardbeg doesn’t say anything officially about the 8yo For Discussion’s maturation regimen on its website, but has advised through other channels and press releases that the 8yo has been matured in ex-sherry casks.  The reason that’s of interest and significance is that the brand’s flagship expression – the Ardbeg 10yo – is renowned for being matured entirely in ex-bourbon casks.  The 8yo For Discussion thus showcases a fascinating contrast to the release that would be most people’s touch point with the distillery.

Bottled at 50.8% abv.

Natural colour and non chill filtered

Tasting Notes

Colour: Pale Straw

Nose: Charcoal, creosote, tar and treacle toffee, with curious hints of fennel, celery and green peppers. Once these subside, there arrives aniseed and woodsmoke. Finally some more herbal notes appear, like fennel, coriander and the same characteristic aromatic woodsmoke.

Palate: Delicious and complex symphony of flavours; treacle, caramel chocolate, eucalyptus, menthol and briar wood give way to a tingling peppery sensation which continues to charcoal and smoked bacon

Finish: Peppermint and clove.
